Vegetables prevent wrinkles
A diet rich in fruits, vegetables and unsaturated fats may ward off wrinkles by boosting the skin's natural defenses against sun damage

What so great about fiber?
Fiber is a type of carbohydrate found in fruits, vegetables, and grains.  Why is fiber such a big deal?  Not only do fibrous foods contain many vitamins and minerals, fiber also packs health benefits including:

  1. Delaying sugar into the blood stream – slows how quickly sugar goes into your bloodstream and therefore may reduce peaks of blood sugar levels
  2. Reducing body weight – helps to make you feel full longer and may displace “empty calorie” foods
  3. Reducing blood cholesterol – if you have heart problems or high cholesterol, eating high fiber foods may help to reduce your blood cholesterol levels
  4. Alleviating constipation – helps to improve regularity.

Slimming down with fiber
Fiber is the indigestible portion of plant food and it has no calories. There are 2 types of fiber, soluble and insoluble but most food have both.

Soluble fiber dissolves in water to create a gel like substance that attaches to fats and ushers them out of the body and this has been found to help lower serum cholesterol and triglyceride levels. It also helps control blood sugar levels.

Insoluble fiber doesn't dissolve during digestion and helps keep our bodies "regular" by retaining water and helping to move waste through the intestinal tract and research has shown it may also help prevent medical problems such as constipation, hemorrhoids and colon cancer.

One of the most surprising benefits is that both types of fiber can help you lose weight, but not because they burn calories or fat. Fiber provides bulk which makes you feel full and it slows down digestion which makes you feel satisfied longer.

Anything that comes from plants, including vegetables, fruits, whole grains and beans is a great source of fiber, so start increasing your fiber intake to take care of that waist line of yours!

Load up on age-defying antioxidants
Fruits and vegetables also are gold mines of longevity-enhancing compounds called antioxidants; these include vitamins C and E and beta carotene. Antioxidants combat free radicals, oxygen fragments that attack and damage cell membranes, life-sustaining proteins and even our cells' genetic code, and in so doing bring about aging and disease.

Diets rich in antioxidants prevent disease and premature aging. Antioxidants also stimulate the immune system and protect the nervous system and brain from the oxidative damage associated with age-related memory loss. A 1993 Harvard School of Public Health study found that adults who supplemented daily with at least 100 IU of vitamin E for at least two years had up to a 40 percent reduction in heart-disease risk.

Men, in particular, can benefit from the immune-enhancing effects of antioxidants: A study published in this month's Journal of the National Cancer Institute found that men who consumed vitamins C and E had lower amounts of certain particles (androgens, for example) associated with the development of prostate cancer. The recommended daily value (RDA) for vitamin C is 60 mg, but up to 1000 mg can be taken safely.

Juice Therapy
Fresh fruit & vegetable juices have been shown to possess remarkable health-promoting properties and has been used for centuries by naturopaths to help treat a range of ailments. The nutrients from freshly squeezed juice are easily absorbed into the bloodstream and within minutes, they would be nourishing your body's cells. In more recent times, scientists have identified the nutritional and biochemical properties of freshly-prepared fruit and vegetable juices which account for their use in helping treat so many health problems.

However, it is important to note that by 'juice' we are not referring to those that are purchased in tins or cartons. Commercially prepared juices are often so processed that the nutritional content is largely lost and the healthy enzymes are killed by heat sterilization.

Avoid the causes of cancer
Cancer strikes nearly 1 in 2 men and more than 1 in every 3 women. You can avoid the causes of cancer by being more vigilant in your daily life.

Fruits and Vegetables key in fight against Cancer
An international conference hosted by the World Health Organisation's International Agency for Research on Cancer in June this year presented preliminary results from the European Investigation into cancer and nutrition. It found strong evidence of the link between not eating enough fruit and vegetables and some cancers.

Nutritional approaches to controlling Hypertension
Dietary approaches to lower elevated blood pressure are becoming welcome additions to the arsenal of treatment modalities for hypertension. These interventions, if effective, may serve alone or as adjunct therapies for high blood pressure because of their safety and considerable economic savings.
